As you know, this is Ethan's first year to start public school. He has adapted to the new schedule and seems to take all the changes in stride. Then one day he came home and was really upset. When Kristie asked him about it he started to cry. Come to find out that his feelings were hurt and he was sad because he wanted to be friends with everybody. He said that he wanted to play with this one boy but another one of his friends told him that if he did play with this boy then he wouldn't be Ethan's friend anymore. "I just want to play with everybody." Poor kid, already having to pick and choose friends. It would be an easy decision if Ethan didn't have to like everyone. But he does, so we have been working on it. He even sat down with his teacher to go over a plan that could work. I haven't heard much about it since but I know he still plays with that one particular boy. As parents we just have to accept the fact that our children are going to have to sail in the rough waters and there isn't too much we can do to help them avoid it. We'll just take it one issue at a time. I just can't believe it already started.
We found out about this other neat experience from Ethan's school teacher. One day she went up to Ethan and asked him what he wanted to learn about today. He thought for a second and then told her "I want to learn the gospel and the scriptures today." Hahaha. She was quite surprised, yet impressed. Ethan's first convert at 5 yrs. old. You go...you Mormon Maniac! Haha.

When Aubrey was in kindergarten I remember asking who her friends were. She literally named every kid in her class. And it was true. Every day or couple of days she would play with a new group of friends. She's still like that. It seems like everybody knows her and like to be around her. We can not go anywhere without her seeing someone she knows. And if you know Aubrey she is not that outgoing, but she is a good, kind friend to lots of people.
It's a great quality to have, but can have its drawbacks- like getting caught between two friends. Aubrey's had her fair share of drama around this, but we've told her to stand up and do the right thing. For the most part she has.
Sorry this post is so long. Here's one last quick story that Ethan might enjoy hearing. In kindergarten, Aubrey saw a little boy named Declan playing alone in the sand. He was really sad because no one would play with him. So Aubrey asked if she could play with him. The rest of that recess she played with him and on the last recess she played with Declan and some of Aubrey's friends joined in. This went on for a couple of days and soon Aubrey's friends were Declans friends and everybody was playing different things together. (BTW- I remember this especially because that week or so of school when I'd pick her up and ask how her day went she'd say- I played with Declan in the sand. That's it, no so and so didn't want to play this and so and so wouldn't play with her, etc.) In kindergarten Declan's mom told me much she appreciated Aubrey being a friend to Declan when he was having a hard time with his other friends. Now, Declan is in Aubrey's 5th grade class this year and on the first day of school his mom re-told Aubrey the kindergarten story. Pretty cool. Sometimes just being a good friend can go a long way. As well as making sure that your friends are good friends to you too.
